Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) – Process and Production


The RTM course will address all aspects of RTM mould design, preparations and injection machine. The course is an intensive theoretical and practical program with lectures and demonstrations.

You will benefit from Sabancı University’s industrial links and research strengths and you will have access to advanced composite manufacturing labs and facilities in SU IMC.


The course consists of theoretical components as well as applications. Teaching is provided through lectures, exercise classes, and laboratory work.

You will study to gain a thorough and detailed understanding of the principles and techniques of RTM manufacturing to apply to your project.

Course Modules

  • Understanding the RTM process:

    Injection pressure, flow rates, fill times and their effect on tool design and construction. Process considerations of resin flow paths working from center and edge point injections, advantages of each will be covered.

  • Pattern design and preparation:

    Flanges, draw angles and undercut consideration will be covered in detail. Eliminating the problem of laminate shrinkage, which will ensure mould cavity accuracy.

  • Building the tool:

    Designing the upper tool and frame structure. Satisfying the tool accuracy through the clamping system. Proper release agents and their application. Installing the mould seals.

  • Resin Systems, Reinforcements and Fillers:

    Review of available resin systems and their properties. Review of reinforcement types and applications. Impact of filler on surface finish and mechanical physical properties of the laminate. Curing techniques and surface finish requirements.

  • Injection machines:

    Comparing their true features and limitations, a complete line of mould construction materials and peripheral products required by the RTM mould builder.
