Dr. Serra Topal is currently working as the postdoctoral research associate at SU IMC & CTCE.

Dr. Topal received her B.Sc degree in Mechanical Engineering from Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey, in 2002. She completed her Masters and Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Gazi University in 2002 and 2006, respectively. She visited the University of Surrey, United Kingdom for her project on 3D woven composite materials in 2013 for one year, while she had been working as a specialist engineer. Following her return, she offered various courses, including graduate-level "Mechanics of Composite Materials". She became an Instructor in March 2018, before joining Sabanci University.

Dr. Topal is specialized in numerical thermomechanical response of metal-ceramic functionally materials, with a background on fracture mechanics of polymeric graded materials from her PhD years. These two types of materials hold considerable potential for research with the developing 3D printing technology. Her research with the UniSurrey team on the late-stage fatigue behavior, damage mechanisms and especially the FEA modeling of 3D woven composites was among the earliest ones in that field. Following her return she submitted 4 EU research projects with the prestigious composite research teams in Padova, Italy and Ghent, Belgium.

During her participation in the "Composite Repair Patch Production" project, a collaboration of Sabanci University with RWTH Aachen University, she studied extensively in effective nano-material integration in high Tg resin materials and carbon fabric reinforcements. She actively joined repair procedures of composites as secondary parts of aircrafts. She thinks supporting students pave the way for productive teams, allowing them to gain hands-on experience as they complete tasks, so she aims for sharing knowledge to interns, graduates and colleagues in the center.

Her large-scale project on "Innovative technologies for efficient bonding of thermoset and thermoplastic composites in aviation applications", a collaboration of Sabanci University with Kordsa and Alanya University, was accepted by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey in July 2018. She is aiming for conducting studies to support her country to become an active player in the global composite technologies. She believes this can only happen by not leading the technology, but creating the technology.
