Advanced Composites Manufacturing Lab offers state-of-the-art equipment for advanced composite manufacturing research and development.

Along with the SU-IMC’s expertise in polymer manufacturing, the Advanced Composites Manufacturing Laboratory located in the SU-IMC is focusing on cutting edge methods at several important phases to produce light weight components from the new composite materials. Such materials are increasingly used in aerospace, marine, automotive and other high-value industries as they meet the high strength and light weight requirement. In manufacturing of such composite materials there are several challenges, as well.

Our research focuses on main phases of composites material production mostly dealt within the industrial applications;

  1. Hand and Automated composites lay up
  2. Resin transfer moulding
  3. Advanced curing
  4. Composites Machining
  5. Additive Manufacturing of both polymeric and metal matrix composites
  6. Large scale metrology of composites

In composite lay up we mainly focus on both hand lay up techniques and automated fibre placement technology. Together with the composites lay up research, we deal with resin transfer moulding applications. The curing phase of composites is critically important to achieve the required material properties. To perform research in this area we host furnaces at various sizes and autoclave facility. Our research on composites machining involves both abrasive waterjet cutting processes and mechanical cutting processes such as milling and drilling. Large scale metrology approaches are of great importance for dimensional verification of the produced composites, which may involve both prismatic features and free-form surfaces. We adopt robotic manufacturing technologies in automated fibre placement, machining and metrology of composite parts.
